Onomatopée imitant un petit cri aigu (d'oiseau principalement). La mésange, (...) qui pleurait! « cuî, cuî, rends-moi mes petits » (FRAPIÉ, Maternelle, 1904, p. 134).
P. anal. La semelle bâillante de ses souliers faisait « coui coui » dans la boue (GONCOURT, Journal, 1889, p. 1077).
Emploi subst. (masc.). Petit cri aigu. Un cui-cui prolongé. Le cui-cui pointu des rats (DORGELÈS, Croix de bois, 1919, p. 87). Le coui-coui aigu, aigre, et plaintivement désespéré des avocettes (ARNOUX, Rhône, mon fleuve, 1944, p. 370).
Prononc. et Orth. :[kyikyi], [kwikwi]. Dans l'emploi subst. s'écrit avec le trait d'union. Les dict. n'indiquent pas de plur. Mais ROB. Suppl. 1970 donne un ex. de J. Perret, Bâtons dans les roues, p. 271 où l'expr. est invariable. Étymol. et Hist. A. Subst. 1856, nov. coui-coui « cri (ici d'un jouet) » (GONCOURT, op. cit., p. 290); 1882 le cui-cui d'un rouge-gorge (P. ARÈNE, Paris ingénu, p. 309). B. Onomatopée 1899, nov. coui coui « bruit de chaussures qui couinent » (GONCOURT, op. cit., p. 1077). Onomatopée simple ou redoublée imitant le cri des oiseaux ou d'autres bruits analogues.
